An Overview of the services at the Bureau:


Information, Referral, Advocacy & Support Services (IRASS)
IRASS incorporates a daily drop-in service, individual appointments and the provision of emergency relief.

Drop In Service

No appointment necessary, clients are seen on a first come - first seen basis and wherever possible we use the preferred language of the client.

Initial enquiries are taken by a trained volunteer staff (facilitated by a fully qualified duty worker) who deals with the request, refers them to one of our specialised program workers or provides information or referral to other appropriate services.


Appointment Services

Some Appointments are available to support people with more complex information and advocacy issues.

Emergency Relief (by appointment only)

Assistance for people in crisis or financial hardship.

The assistance available includes food vouchers, travel costs, pharmaceuticals and telephone bills.

Available to people living in areas covered by postcodes 3169, 3171, 3172, 3174.


Child Support Program

Provides information and assistance to custodial and non-custodial parents about all aspects of the Child Support Scheme.

Provides advocacy for clients to Centrelink or to the Child Support Agency.

Promotes community awaeness about the Scheme and advocates for improvements to the scheme.


Financial Counselling

Provides information to and advocates on behalf of clients experiencing financiql difficulty due to unpaid debts.

The program also undertakes Community education programs particularly about credit and advocates debtors' rights.


No Interest Loans (NILS)

The No Interst Loan Scheme (NILS) provides people on low income with flexible and affordable credit (without incurring interest) for the purchase of essential new household items, for example, a bed, fridge or washing machine or medical/dental expenses. Only for people in postcode areas 3169, 3171, 3172, 3174.


Job services Australia (JSA) CALD & Generalist (Stream 4)

As part of the AMES Consortium and Job Services Aust. we provide support and assistance for clients to obtain employment related skills and secure sustainable employment.

Clients who for a number of reasons are finding it difficult to gain or maintain employment will receive assistance and support to address their personal barriers to employment, determine their employment goals, and have access to job training, skills development and work experience when and where it is needed.

Specialised employment services are available for young people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.


Counselling Services

General counselling services to all ages in partnership with Cairnmillar Provisional Psychologists are available by appointment.


Settlement Services

Provides comprehensive settlement services to assist new arrivals. Our workers are bilingual specialist workers who add language and cultural skills from Sudan, Equatorian Africa, Kenya, former Yugoslavia, Iran, Burma & Afghanistan to skilled and professional casework and group facilitation.


Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Services (IHSS)

In partnership with AMES, Redback Services, Brotherhood of St Laurence and Foundation House we assist refugee and humanitarian entrant new arrivals to settle by providing an integrated settlement service.

This includes making linkages to appropriate government and non-government services and supporting families in their new environmant.

Assisting people from point of arrival up to 6 - 12 months in Australia.


Community Settlement Services

Settlement Grants Program (SGP)

Advocacy and counselling for families and individuals from non-english speaking backgrounds. Community development, policy and individual advocacy, cross cultural information sessions and workshops, provides information about settlement processes and systems for newly arrived migrants. Assisting new arrivals from 6 months to 5 years in Australia.


South Eastern Migration Advice Service (SEMAS)

SEMAS is a joint initiative of SMLS and SCAAB

SEMAS staff can offer limited assistance for people seeking refugee of humanitarian visas or split family reunions.

SEMAS staff work closely with other community organisations to provide community education in the area of Migration Law.

Volunteer Program

we are renowned for our diverse volunteer team which consists of volunteers with a range of different cultural and language backgrounds.

Our volunteers undertake a range of tasks, including assisting individuals, administration, promoting the value of volunteering to the broader community & involvement in community development projects.


Co-located Workers

These workers outreach from outside organisations and compliment funded services at the Bureau by undertaking case-work and community projects in partnership with us:

  • Consumer Affairs Victoria
  • Australian Vietnamese Women's Association.
