What is the Refugee Brokerage Program?
Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau (SCAAB) has recently commenced implementation of the DVC-funded Refugee Brokerage Program (RBP) in the Southeast.
This Program is one of many being implemented in other metropolitan areas in Victoria including Northwest (Brimbank and Hume), West (Maribyrnong and Hobson’s Bay), and Inner (Moreland, Mooney Valley, Yarra and Melbourne) areas and in rural Victoria.
The Refugee Brokerage Program is aimed at developing a partnership of community leaders to work with key local services in looking for options to improve access to facilities for refugee communities.
The Program is based on the following principles:
- Local community solutions for local issues whereby community problem solving starts with needs identified by the local community and the changes required locally to address these needs;
- Strong community networks, including formal and informal links with a diverse range of groups within refugee communities;
- Enabling partnerships to effect local change that addresses the identified needs and issues facing refugee communities; and
- Active Government that provides a framework for broader community capacity building.
Target communities in the Southeast include groups from Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Oromo group.
Springvale Community Aid & Advice Bureau has appointed Maria de los Reyes as dedicated Project Officer and Marija Dragic as Consultant for the project.
Upcoming selected activities include:
- 21st October - Small Grant Writing Workshop.
- 26th October - Sudanese Leaders Consultative Meeting.
- 30th October - Afghan Leaders Consultative Meeting.
